Summary

Star Atlas is an upcoming space exploration and strategy game built on Solana. Based in the year 2620, the Star Atlas universe aims to offer a unique gaming experience through combining a range of core gaming features, blockchain-backed player ownership and play-to-earn (P2E) mechanics. It’s being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and was founded by developer (Automata S.A, the Team), which consists of Michael Wagner, Daniel Floyd, Jacob Floyd and Pablo Quironga. Star Atlas is in the process of moving towards a DAO.

The game will be released in stages and as of writing is unreleased. The first major release and playable experience will be SCORE, with the Team to slowly roll out extended gameplay features. The full game is a large undertaking, and isn’t expected to be released in its entirety for multiple years.

What is Star Atlas?

Star Atlas aims to be a strategy and exploration MMOG featuring a rich ecosystem where players can explore new worlds, compete for resources, participate in combat, complete quests and engage in governance or diplomacy. Star Atlas allows for a wide variety of in-game assets and NFT living on Solana to enable true asset ownership. By having ownership of in-game assets, players are more adequately rewarded for time and commitment spent in the Star Atlas universe—if a player chooses to stop playing they can simply sell their assets for crypto or fiat.

Players start in a safe corner of the Star Atlas world, where players can complete basic tasks to earn small rewards. As players become more comfortable within the game, users can venture into unknown space to find and harvest raw resources which are refined, traded, or sold—although entering into high-risk zones players risk their assets being burned if the NFTs are destroyed in-game.

Core game elements

Star Atlas consists of core game features such as:

  • Factions: Star Atlas revolves around 3 factions; MUD Faction, ONI Faction and the Ustur faction which fight for resources, territory and politics. Players choose their permanent faction and can choose to participate in guilds.
  • Player organisations: Eventually players can create or join player organisations. These will be a group of players who share a similar play style or goals.
  • Ships: Ships allow players to participate in the game. Ships range from entry level ($25) to more advanced commander ships ($100K+). Each has its own advantages or uses (combat, racing, freight or repair, among many others).
  • Economy and resources: The pursuit of raw resources underpins a larger ‘metaverse economy’ where users can specialise into in-game careers such as freighters, miners, bounty hunters and many more. As a user earns more resources, they can purchase more goods enabling further specialisation and greater incomes.
  • Combat: As players explore and compete for land and resources players can lose hard-earned assets. There are 3 zones where rewards are multiplied, but so is the risk of losing in-game assets.
    • Safe (1x rewards): Players who lose their ship respawn and do not lose assets.
    • Medium (3x rewards): Do not risk losing assets but a player’s ship will take on damage.
    • High-risk (8x reward): NFTs destroyed in this area are burned forever and users can collect spilled resources.
  • Exploration and land: Players can explore anywhere in the Star Atlas universe, although moving further away requires more resources (or faster ships). Users can discover land which they can bid on and claim through auction.
  • Governance and politics: Factions and guilds can come together to decide in-game governance, introduce new taxes or medicate conflicts.
  • Items and marketplace: A pillar of the game is the ability to easily buy and sell items and NFTs through the in-game economy and marketplace. Items used for in-game activities include ships, crew, equipment and components.

ATLAS Token Utility

POLIS

POLIS is the Star Atlas governance token used to govern the Star Atlas world. POLIS represents a right to governance, a financial stake in the game, voting power in the DAOs where it’s staked and control of the Treasury. It can be acquired through primary insurance, secondary markets, providing liquidity, in-game rewards or governance participation.

POLIS has a fixed maximum supply of 360M and will not be inflationary.

ATLAS

ATLAS is the native in-game currency and will be the medium exchange for in-game asset purchases. ATLAS is inflationary and the supply will increase in line with the economic growth of the Star Atlas metaverse economy. New ATLAS enters the ecosystem as rewards for players completing in-game activities.

The POLIS DAO monitors the inflation rate of ATLAS and can adjust the reward parameters. The target of ATLAS is to make the game accessible and encourage growth for new users while providing sufficient financial rewards to DAO members.

GAOs

Finally, Ships are issued as NFTs via Galactic Asset Offerings (GAOs). These are sales of ships to use in game and used to fund development of Star Atlas by the Team. There will be limited supply offerings and price ranges depending on the quality or use case of the ship.
