Altered State Machine asto
Summary
Altered State Machine (ASM) is a platform creating ownership of an artificial intelligence (AI) ‘agent’ via an NFT.
It allows anyone to own an AI, where users can pair this intelligence with an NFT to create an ASM agent.
These can be carried across the metaverse and aim to be the next evolution to NFTs by introducing personality to traditionally static NFTs.
ASM was co-founded by brothers Arron and David McDonald, Phil Williams and Hal Smith-Stevens to connect AI to the blockchain. Their first game, which doubles as a proof of concept, is ‘Artificial Intelligence Football Association’.
How does it work?
Each AI agent’s comprised of 3 parts:
- Brain: The core of the agent used to store base attributes. Currently, there are 2 types of brains:
- Genesis brains = Seed assets in the ecosystem with more functionality. They can pass down traits (memories) and include early access/perks.
- Gen 2 Brains = Mined via staking ASTO. They do not have the same reward system and cannot pass down traits. There is no difference between these 2 brains in-game.
- Memories: Stores behavioural strategies the agent has learned.
- Form (Optional): Stores the physical attributes of the NFT.
NFT Drop
In October, ASM held a 10,000 NFT box drop that features 1 Genesis Brain and 4 All-Star Avatar NFTs.
Why pair AI with NFTs?
Currently, NFTs are static, either a piece of artwork or a digital collectible. Dynamic NFTs add extra layers to the NFTs, which can be helpful to create a range of NFTs with added utility and allows the holder to inject personality into their NFT.
Brains and Agents are designed to be used in games, financial applications, virtual assistants or online worlds.
Altered State Machine’s integration of AI and NFTs enables 2 primary opportunities:
- Connecting AI to the blockchain: ASM uses NFTs to prove ownership and interact with AI on the blockchain.
- Injecting intelligence into NFTs: Currently, the Metaverse only contains playable characters and avatars. There are no non-playable characters (‘NPCs‘), leading to a less vibrant metaverse experience. ASM injecting intelligence into NFTs enables the creation of NPCs within the Metaverse and extends the possibility of current NFT avatars.
ASTO Token Utility
Altered State Machine’s native token is ASTO, an ERC-20 token with a maximum supply of 2.384B.
There appears to be considerable utility packed in:
- Used for genome mining (mining Gen2 brains)
- Required for AI Agent (brain) training
- Governance
- Minting future ecosystem NFTs
- In-game upgrades
- Rewards
ASTO will be distributed as follows: play-to-earn fund (20%); ecosystem development (16%); ASM DAO reserve (15%); yield farming and staking (15%); team and founders (16%); advisors and partners (3%); and early contributors (15%).

The entire token supply was minted at inception and locked into specific allocations. These allocations will be released over time according to the below release schedule.
