How to Allocate a $100K to $500K Crypto Portfolio in Australia (2026)
How serious Australian and global investors structure a six-figure digital asset portfolio across a Bitcoin core, on-chain revenue protocols, and cold-storage self-custody.
“If I had a half million dollars to deploy today, I’d first assess the market conditions and then I’d really build around a core framework… a Bitcoin core, a liquid reserve that can generate income, and then how we actually invest into on-chain investments.” Ben Simpson
Two questions before you deploy anything
If you are a business owner or high income earner with surplus capital, maybe from selling an investment property, taking dividends, or exiting a business, you are probably thinking about building your crypto portfolio more seriously. Before you deploy a single dollar, ask two questions. Is now the right time to buy? And if it is, where exactly is that money going?
I have been full-time in crypto since 2017. I have made a lot of money, lost a lot of money, and made plenty of mistakes. The most common mistake I see with larger amounts is not the asset choice. It is deploying too early, following the wrong people online, buying things you do not understand, and then never taking profits.
The good news is that the framework does not change much between $100K and $500K. The most important part is how you allocate and when you deploy, not the headline number.
How I’d Deploy $500,000 Into Crypto Right Now
The core framework
The framework we teach has three layers. A Bitcoin core, which is the foundation of the portfolio, with its exact size decided in your written Strategy Sheet based on your goals and risk tolerance. A liquid reserve in stablecoins that can generate income and gives you dry powder to buy weakness. And a smaller allocation to on-chain investments: protocols and on-chain businesses with real revenue, which we believe are a better model than the old coins of previous cycles.
The goal of the on-chain layer is to grow faster than Bitcoin and then, using the Profit Ladder, move those gains back into the Bitcoin core. My personal goal is to build a family office of Bitcoin, and this structure is how I do it.
This framework is general education, not personal advice. Your own allocation depends on your goals, timeframe and risk tolerance.
The SHIFT Method
The SHIFT Method: 5 steps every Collective Shift member follows
- S: Set your plan in writing (your Strategy Sheet)
- H: Hold Bitcoin as your core
- I: Invest in on-chain businesses with real revenue
- F: Filter every coin before you buy
- T: Take profits on the way up (your Profit Ladder)
Applying the SHIFT Method to a six-figure allocation
Set your plan in writing. With larger sums, a Strategy Sheet is non-negotiable. Write your total allocation, your target weights, your deployment schedule and your Profit Ladder rungs before you buy.
Hold Bitcoin as your core. The bulk of the allocation goes to Bitcoin, held in self-custody on a hardware wallet once it is purchased.
Invest in on-chain businesses with real revenue. We look for protocols with measurable fees, revenue and users. Positions in the Live Crypto Portfolio are chosen on this thesis, with every decision dated and explained to members.
Filter every coin before you buy. Every asset goes through a filter covering revenue, token supply, team, liquidity and risk. Most coins fail, and that is the point.
Take profits on the way up. Your Profit Ladder is written before you deploy, not after the euphoria starts.
How I’d Allocate $100K In Crypto Right Now
When to deploy: lump sum or staged
Regardless of whether you are investing $25,000, $100,000 or $500,000, timing your deployment matters. In the $100K video I explain how we were accumulating Bitcoin around the 200-week moving average for eight to twelve weeks. Staging your entries over weeks, with more weight when price is near long-term support, reduces the risk of deploying everything at a local top.
A practical approach is to split the allocation into tranches, deploy the first tranche once your plan is written, and schedule the rest on dates or levels you define in advance. Keep the stablecoin reserve ready for sharp drawdowns, which happen in every cycle.
Execution: why OTC matters at this size
This is the part most people miss. When you buy large amounts on a retail exchange, much of the cost sits in the spread rather than the advertised fee, and I have seen spreads of up to 2% to 3% on large orders. On $500,000, a spread of that size would be $10k to $15k gone before the market even moves.
An OTC (over-the-counter) desk quotes you a single price for the whole order, usually at a much tighter spread. For six-figure allocations, that difference adds up quickly. Always confirm the all-in quote, compare at least two desks, and withdraw to your own hardware wallet once settled.
Structure: personal, company or SMSF
For Australians, structure can matter as much as asset choice. Gains in your personal name can be taxed at up to 47% at the top marginal rate, with a 50% CGT discount if held for 12 months. Companies pay 30%, or 25% for base rate entities, without the discount. An SMSF in accumulation phase pays 15%, or effectively 10% on assets held more than 12 months, and can pay 0% in pension phase, subject to the rules.
SMSFs that hold crypto need a compliant investment strategy, proper custody and a specialist administrator. Speak to a registered tax agent and a licensed adviser before you choose a structure. Our education partner Crypto Tax Australia specialises in crypto tax.

Worked examples at $100K, $250K and $500K
Here is how the same framework scales, as an illustration only. At $100K, an investor might hold a Bitcoin core, a stablecoin reserve, and a small allocation across three to five filtered on-chain businesses, with the exact weights written in their own Strategy Sheet. The small number of positions keeps the portfolio manageable and makes the Profit Ladder simple to execute.
At $250K, the structure stays similar but deployment becomes more important. The investor might deploy in four tranches over eight to twelve weeks, use an OTC desk for the Bitcoin tranches, and hold the stablecoin reserve in a mix of self-custody and a reputable Australian exchange for liquidity. The on-chain allocation might be spread across five to eight positions, each with a written thesis and a defined exit rung.
At $500K, structure and security become the priority. Investors at this level often consider splitting holdings between personal and SMSF structures, using multi-signature or multiple hardware wallets, documenting their seed phrase storage for estate planning, and reviewing their Strategy Sheet quarterly. The on-chain allocation stays disciplined, because a larger portfolio does not need more coins. It needs better decisions.
Illustrative examples only, not a recommendation. Your allocation should reflect your own goals and circumstances.
Security and custody for larger portfolios
Once a portfolio reaches six figures, custody is not optional. Move long-term holdings to hardware wallets such as Ledger or Trezor, keep seed phrases offline in more than one secure location, and never share them with anyone. Remember that Collective Shift will never ask you to send funds or share keys, on WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram or anywhere else. If someone claiming to be us does, it is not us, and you can check our official channels at collectiveshift.io/verify-collective-shift/.
Finally, write down who in your family knows how to access the portfolio if something happens to you. Estate planning is one of the most overlooked parts of a serious digital asset allocation, and it belongs on your Strategy Sheet together with your Profit Ladder.
Mistakes we see with larger allocations
Deploying everything in one day at a local high. Spreading capital across dozens of small coins with no filter. Leaving large balances on exchanges instead of in self-custody. Paying retail spreads on six-figure orders. Ignoring structure and tax until after the gains are realised. And, most commonly, having no written exit plan. Every one of these is avoidable with a Strategy Sheet written before the first purchase.

Frequently asked questions
How should I allocate $100K in crypto?
Start with a written plan, a Bitcoin core, a stablecoin reserve and a small, filtered allocation to on-chain businesses with real revenue, deployed in stages.
Should I use an OTC desk?
For six-figure orders, an OTC desk usually quotes a much tighter spread than a retail exchange order book, so it is worth comparing quotes from at least two desks.
Can I hold crypto in my SMSF?
Yes, if your investment strategy allows it and custody and compliance rules are met. Speak with a specialist SMSF accountant.
