The Short Answer

A crypto mentor is an experienced investor or educator who helps you build and stick to your own plan. A mentor teaches and checks your thinking; a licensed financial advisor can give personalized advice. Look for a named track record, independent reviews and a clear process, and walk away from anyone promising returns.

As of November 2026. General information only, not personal financial, tax or legal advice. Speak with a licensed US tax professional or financial advisor about your own situation.

What a Crypto Mentor Does

A mentor helps you learn a process, answers questions and holds you accountable to your plan. They do not make decisions for you.

Mentor, Course or Financial Advisor?

A course teaches the basics, a mentor gives ongoing guidance and a licensed financial advisor can recommend specific investments for your situation. Many people combine education with professional advice.

Questions to Ask a Potential Mentor

  • Who are you, and can I verify your background?
  • What process do you teach?
  • Where can I read independent reviews?
  • Do you earn commissions on anything you recommend?

Red Flags

  • Guaranteed returns
  • Requests to hold your coins or keys
  • Pressure to act fast

What a Good Mentoring Session Looks Like

A useful session starts with your written plan, not with a hot tip. You might review whether your allocation still matches your goals, test a coin you are considering against a simple filter and agree on what you will do if prices move sharply. You leave with clearer thinking and your own decisions, not a list of things to buy.

How to Verify a Mentor

Search their name and business, check for independent reviews and look at how long they have been publishing. In the US you can check whether someone is a registered investment adviser on the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site or a broker on FINRA BrokerCheck. Many educators are not registered, which is fine for education but means they should not give you personalized investment advice.

Group Mentoring or One-on-One?

Group sessions are a cost-effective way to learn and hear other people’s questions. One-on-one time is useful when you want to test your own plan in detail. Many people start in a group and add private sessions as their portfolio grows.

Questions to Bring to Your First Session

  • Does my plan match my timeline and goals?
  • Is my custody setup sound?
  • How should I think about taking profits?
  • What records should I keep for US taxes?

A Simple Example

Imagine someone who bought crypto in a rising market without a plan. In their first session, they write down why they hold each asset and what would make them sell. In the second, they move long-term holdings to a hardware wallet. By the third, they have a Profit Ladder written down and a spreadsheet for tax records. Nothing about that requires a prediction; it is the SHIFT Method applied step by step.

Fixing a Messy Portfolio: What a Session Covers

A common reason people look for a mentor is a portfolio with too many small positions bought on tips. In the video below, Ben Simpson shows how to clean that up using a core and satellite structure: decide what the core is, cap each satellite and write down what would make you sell. A good mentoring session walks you through that thinking for your own holdings, so the decisions stay yours.

How Our Analysts Size Positions

The Academy module on portfolio allocation and position sizing describes a portfolio like a house. Core positions are the foundation, and smaller positions are your higher-risk bets on newer coins or themes. Too much in the risky part and the portfolio becomes unstable; too little and you may miss the upside you came for.

In a September 2026 lesson on building and rebalancing portfolios, our team explains why Bitcoin stays the anchor: it is the pillar that has held us in good stead over the years. In a separate lesson on early-stage coins, the team asks whether you really want to face losing 10 to 20% of your whole crypto portfolio in days by putting that much into a single early project, in a cycle meant to last years.

How Our Team Takes Profits

In the Academy module on goal setting and profit taking, the team starts with a question: what does success look like for you? Growing wealth, beating inflation and paying off a mortgage each lead to a different sell plan. The module also covers stablecoins, which are tokens designed to track the US dollar, as a way to lock in gains without leaving crypto entirely.

In our live cohort on building a sell plan, one example the team shares is taking a third of a position off each time it doubles. The analyst who used it was clear that it is not a crystal ball and not better or worse than a quarter or a half; it is a personal choice. What matters is that the rule is written down before prices move.

Checking Credentials in the US

Two free tools help. The SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site shows registered investment advisers, and FINRA’s BrokerCheck shows registered brokers. An educator does not need to be registered to teach, but if someone tells you exactly what to buy for your situation, check whether they are allowed to.

How Our Team Thinks About Market Cycles

In an October 2026 live cohort session, Ben Simpson described how crypto has more or less followed four-year cycles, with bull markets running around three years and bear markets around one, while stressing that it is not as simple as that. On-chain analyst Checkmate, who writes the on-chain analytics column on our site, puts it this way: he respects the four-year cycle as a framework but does not anchor his view to it.

That is why the SHIFT Method uses a written plan instead of a prediction. The total crypto market fell 48% from its October 2025 peak by June 2026 (The Kobeissi Letter, 5 June 2026). A plan written before a fall like that is the one you are most likely to follow during it.

Prepare Before Your First Session

Bring a list of what you hold, where each asset is stored and why you bought it. Write one sentence on your goal and your timeline. Sessions go further when the mentor can see your starting point, and the act of writing it down often answers half your questions.
