The Short Answer

Bitcoin can suit long-term US investors who size it carefully and can hold through large falls, but it is volatile and has fallen more than 70% from a peak several times. Whether it is a good investment for you depends on your goals, timeline and how much risk you can carry. You can hold the coins directly or get exposure through a spot Bitcoin ETF in a brokerage account or IRA, and the IRS taxes gains as property either way.

The Case For and Against Bitcoin

Case forCase against
A fixed supply of 21 million coinsLarge price swings, including several falls of more than 70%
New supply is cut roughly every four years in the halvingNo earnings, dividends or cash flow to value it on
Spot Bitcoin ETFs, approved by the SEC in January 2024, make it easy to hold in a brokerage account or IRARules, tax treatment and legislation can change
Over 15 years of history as a working networkLosses from fraud, hacks or lost recovery phrases are usually permanent

None of the points on the left guarantee future returns, and none on the right mean Bitcoin will fail. The table is a way to weigh both sides against your own plan.

How Far Bitcoin Has Fallen Before

Bitcoin has had several falls of more than 70% from a peak. After its November 2021 high it fell by roughly three quarters by November 2022. More recently, the total crypto market fell 48% from its October 2025 peak by June 2026 (The Kobeissi Letter, 5 June 2026).

A simple test before you buy: imagine your Bitcoin position falling 75% and staying there for a year. If that would make you sell, the position is probably too large for your plan.

What Our Research Hub Is Tracking in Late 2026

Our Research Hub collects analyst views each day so members can see the arguments on both sides. A few from the past two months:

  • On 17 September 2026, JPMorgan analysts suggested Bitcoin could outperform gold if investors reduce their ETF hedging positions (The Block, 17 September 2026).
  • On 30 October 2026, CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju noted that spot ETF net flows were near zero for the year while Bitcoin had only a modest fall for the year, which he read as price holding up without ETF demand.
  • On 2 November 2026, liquidity analyst Michael Howell argued the global liquidity cycle is rolling over and risk assets face a turbulent period, while still favoring gold and Bitcoin as hedges against monetary inflation (Capital Wars, 2 November 2026).

Our team’s read: analysts with good track records disagree about the next six months. That is exactly why a written plan, not a forecast, decides how much you hold.

Coins or a Spot Bitcoin ETF?

How the IRS Taxes Bitcoin

The IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling, swapping or spending Bitcoin can create a capital gain or loss. If you held it for more than one year, the gain is generally taxed at long-term capital gains rates, which are usually lower than ordinary income rates. From the 2025 tax year, US brokers report sales on Form 1099-DA, and each sale goes on Form 8949.

Inside an IRA, gains are not taxed each year; our crypto IRA guide and Roth IRA crypto guide explain the trade-offs. A licensed US tax professional can confirm how this applies to you.

How Much Bitcoin Is Reasonable?

There is no single right amount. As one reference point, the BlackRock Investment Institute said in December 2024 that a 1 to 2% allocation to bitcoin is a reasonable range for a multi-asset portfolio, if investors believe in wider adoption and can bear rapid price falls. It also found that going beyond 2% raised portfolio risk disproportionately. That is research on a model portfolio, not a rule for you. Our portfolio sizing framework walks through a drawdown test.

How Our Analysts Size Positions

The Academy module on portfolio allocation and position sizing describes a portfolio like a house. Core positions are the foundation, and smaller positions are your higher-risk bets on newer coins or themes. Too much in the risky part and the portfolio becomes unstable; too little and you may miss the upside you came for.

In a September 2026 lesson on building and rebalancing portfolios, our team explains why Bitcoin stays the anchor: it is the pillar that has held us in good stead over the years. In a separate lesson on early-stage coins, the team asks whether you really want to face losing 10 to 20% of your whole crypto portfolio in days by putting that much into a single early project, in a cycle meant to last years.

Five Questions to Answer Before You Buy

  1. Can I hold through a fall of 70% or more without selling?
  2. How long am I planning to hold: one year, five years or longer?
  3. What share of my total portfolio will it be, after my emergency fund and employer 401(k) match?
  4. Will I hold coins in self-custody, a spot ETF in an IRA, or both?
  5. When will I take profits, and is that rule written down?

How Our Team Takes Profits

In the Academy module on goal setting and profit taking, the team starts with a question: what does success look like for you? Growing wealth, beating inflation and paying off a mortgage each lead to a different sell plan. The module also covers stablecoins, which are tokens designed to track the US dollar, as a way to lock in gains without leaving crypto entirely.

In our live cohort on building a sell plan, one example the team shares is taking a third of a position off each time it doubles. The analyst who used it was clear that it is not a crystal ball and not better or worse than a quarter or a half; it is a personal choice. What matters is that the rule is written down before prices move.

Red Flags That Have Nothing to Do With Bitcoin Itself

Many Bitcoin losses come from fraud, not price. The FTC warns that anyone who guarantees returns, asks you to pay in crypto, or contacts you unexpectedly about an investment is a red flag. Never share your recovery phrase.

In our week three cohort session on wallet security, the team’s checklist is short. Buy a hardware wallet brand new and direct from the maker’s own store. Treat your recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, as the master key: keep it on paper or another analog format and never type it into a website. Do not act on urgent emails or messages that ask for it.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for US readers.

Is Bitcoin a good investment for beginners?

It can be part of a beginner portfolio if it is sized carefully and held for years. Bitcoin is volatile, so only invest what you could see fall a long way, and learn how it works before you buy.

How far has Bitcoin fallen in the past?

Bitcoin has had several falls of more than 70% from a peak, including a fall of roughly three quarters between November 2021 and November 2022.

Is a spot Bitcoin ETF safer than owning Bitcoin?

An ETF removes the need to manage keys, but the price risk is the same. You own fund shares, not coins, and pay an annual expense ratio.

How is Bitcoin taxed in the US?

The IRS treats it as property. Selling, swapping or spending it can create a capital gain or loss, and holdings kept for more than one year generally qualify for long-term capital gains rates.

Can I hold Bitcoin in an IRA?

Yes, through a spot Bitcoin ETF at a brokerage or a self-directed IRA custodian that holds coins. Read our crypto IRA guide and speak with a licensed professional.
