Bitcoin ETF or Buying Bitcoin Directly in Australia: What’s the Difference?

Two ways to get Bitcoin exposure, compared on what you actually own and how you hold it.

Collective Shift guide cover: Bitcoin ETF or Buying Bitcoin Directly?

Short answer: A Bitcoin ETF gives you exposure to the Bitcoin price through units bought in a brokerage account, while buying Bitcoin directly means you own the coins and can hold them in your own wallet. Collective Shift suggests choosing based on whether you want convenience inside an existing share account or full ownership and self-custody.

Written by Ben Simpson, TEDx speaker and founder of Collective Shift (Melbourne, 2020). Collective Shift teaches the 5-step SHIFT Method, a written crypto plan that members build and run themselves, backed by 4.8 out of 5 from 135+ Trustpilot reviews.

Key points (TL;DR)

  • An ETF holds Bitcoin for you. Buying directly means you hold it yourself, or on an exchange.
  • ETFs trade during market hours in a brokerage account. Bitcoin trades all day, every day.
  • Only direct ownership lets you move Bitcoin to self-custody.
  • Both are CGT assets in Australia, so tax usually applies when you sell either.
  • Step H of the SHIFT Method is holding Bitcoin as your core, ideally in self-custody.

What is a Bitcoin ETF?

A Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a fund that trades on a stock exchange and tracks the price of Bitcoin. In Australia, the ASX admitted its first spot Bitcoin ETF on 20 June 2024 (ASX media release, 20 June 2024). You buy units through a normal brokerage account, the same way you would buy shares, and the fund holds the Bitcoin with a custodian.

Ben explains in the video below how ETF buyers have shaped this cycle: they buy Bitcoin itself and generally do not rotate into altcoins. Our page on crypto ETFs explained covers how crypto ETFs work in more detail.

Key takeaway: Ben explains that ETF buyers are buying Bitcoin and not rotating into altcoins, and shows how he tracks ETF flows to understand where institutional demand is going.

Key takeaway: Ben explains why the platform you buy on matters with larger amounts, because fees and spreads add up, and how he stages cash before building a Bitcoin position.

What does buying Bitcoin directly mean?

Buying directly means you purchase Bitcoin itself on a crypto exchange. You can leave it on the exchange or withdraw it to a wallet you control. Once it is in self-custody, nobody else holds it for you, and only your keys can move it.

For many long-term investors that is the point. See our cold storage guide and how much Bitcoin to hold for the next steps.

How do a Bitcoin ETF and direct Bitcoin compare?

  • What you own: ETF units that track Bitcoin, versus the Bitcoin itself.
  • Custody: the fund’s custodian holds the Bitcoin, versus you or your exchange.
  • Where you buy: a brokerage account, versus a crypto exchange.
  • Trading hours: stock market hours, versus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Moving it: ETF units stay in your brokerage account. Direct Bitcoin can be sent to any wallet.
  • Costs: ETFs charge an ongoing management fee. Direct purchases involve exchange fees and spreads, which Ben says are worth comparing carefully with larger amounts.
  • Security: an ETF removes the need to manage keys. Direct ownership means you look after your own keys and recovery words.

Which one suits which investor?

An ETF can suit someone who wants Bitcoin exposure alongside shares in an existing account, without managing a wallet.

Direct ownership suits someone who wants to own the asset itself, hold it in self-custody and move it whenever they like. It takes a little more learning at the start, mainly around security.

Whichever you choose, the bigger decision is how much of your portfolio Bitcoin should be. Our guide on Bitcoin versus altcoins covers that.

How is each one taxed in Australia?

Both ETF units and Bitcoin are capital gains tax assets in Australia, so a gain or loss is usually worked out when you sell or swap them. From 1 July 2027, the 50% CGT discount is replaced by cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax for gains accruing from that date, according to the ATO. Frequently asked questions

Is a Bitcoin ETF the same as owning Bitcoin?

No. An ETF gives you units in a fund that tracks the Bitcoin price, held by a custodian. Owning Bitcoin directly means you hold the coins and can move them to your own wallet.

Are there Bitcoin ETFs in Australia?

Yes. The ASX admitted its first spot Bitcoin ETF on 20 June 2024, and Bitcoin ETFs can be bought through Australian brokerage accounts.

Can I move a Bitcoin ETF to a hardware wallet?

No. ETF units stay in your brokerage account. Only Bitcoin you buy directly can be withdrawn to a hardware wallet.

Is a Bitcoin ETF safer than buying Bitcoin?

They carry different risks. An ETF removes the need to manage keys but relies on the fund and its custodian. Direct ownership relies on you keeping your keys and recovery words secure.

Do I pay tax on a Bitcoin ETF in Australia?

Generally yes. ETF units and Bitcoin are both CGT assets, so a capital gain or loss usually arises when you sell. Speak with a registered tax agent about your situation.
