Seed phrase
Seed phrase: A seed phrase, also called a recovery or mnemonic phrase, is a list of 12 or 24 words that backs up a crypto wallet. From those words, any compatible wallet can recreate all of your private keys and restore your funds. Whoever has the phrase controls the wallet, so it needs to be stored offline and kept private.
How a seed phrase works
When you set up a self-custody wallet it creates a large random number and shows it to you as words drawn from a standard list of 2,048 English words (the BIP39 standard). The order matters. Those words regenerate the same keys on any wallet that supports the standard, which is why you can move from one device or app to another.
12 words or 24 words?
Both are considered secure for individual investors when generated by a reputable wallet. A 24 word phrase adds more randomness, while 12 words is easier to write down accurately. Accurate, safe storage matters far more than the length.
Storing your seed phrase
- Write it on paper or stamp it into metal. Never photograph it, email it or save it in cloud notes.
- Keep copies in two separate secure places to protect against fire or loss.
- Consider how a trusted person could access it if something happened to you, without exposing it today.
The most common seed phrase scam
Fake support accounts, wallet pop-ups and airdrop sites ask you to “verify” or “sync” your wallet by entering your phrase. No legitimate wallet, exchange or support team will ever ask for it. Treating that as an absolute rule prevents most self-custody losses.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
If your device still works you can create a new wallet and move your funds to it straight away. If both the device and the phrase are lost, the funds cannot be recovered.
Is a seed phrase the same as a private key?
No. A seed phrase is a backup that can generate many private keys, so it protects the whole wallet rather than a single address.
Can I store my seed phrase in a password manager?
Many security guides suggest keeping it fully offline because any online copy adds risk. Weigh convenience against that risk for the amounts involved.
