The SHIFT Method: A 5-Step Process for Investing in Crypto
From Collective Shift, founded in 2020 by TEDx speaker Ben Simpson and built on the 5-step SHIFT Method. Updated November 2026.
The Short Answer
The SHIFT Method is a five-step process for investing in crypto with a written plan, created by Collective Shift founder and TEDx speaker Ben Simpson. S: Set your plan in writing. H: Hold Bitcoin as your core. I: Invest in on-chain businesses. F: Filter every coin before you buy. T: Take profits on the way up.
As of November 2026. General information only, not personal financial advice.
S: Set Your Plan in Writing
Your Strategy Sheet records your goals, timeline, position sizes and exit rules before any money moves. Writing it down is what stops a bad week from turning into a bad decision.

H: Hold Bitcoin as Your Core
Bitcoin sits at the center of the portfolio. We teach self-custody, so you hold your own keys rather than leaving coins on an exchange. A hardware wallet is a small device that stores your private keys offline.
I: Invest in On-Chain Businesses
Beyond Bitcoin, we look at on-chain businesses: blockchain networks and applications that earn real revenue from real users. Revenue and usage are easier to check than promises.
F: Filter Every Coin Before You Buy
Before any purchase, check token unlocks (scheduled releases of new supply), dilution and liquidity (how easily you can sell without moving the price).
T: Take Profits on the Way Up
Your Profit Ladder is a set of price levels, chosen in advance, where you take partial profits. In the US, each sale is a taxable event, so read our US crypto tax guide before you ladder out.
Where the SHIFT Method Came From
Ben Simpson built the SHIFT Method from his own early mistakes, including buying without a plan and selling at the wrong time, and from years of teaching members at Collective Shift. Each letter answers a question most new investors skip: what is my plan, what is my core, what else do I own and why, how do I filter it and when do I sell?
How Our Analysts Size Positions
The Academy module on portfolio allocation and position sizing describes a portfolio like a house. Core positions are the foundation, and smaller positions are your higher-risk bets on newer coins or themes. Too much in the risky part and the portfolio becomes unstable; too little and you may miss the upside you came for.
In a September 2026 lesson on building and rebalancing portfolios, our team explains why Bitcoin stays the anchor: it is the pillar that has held us in good stead over the years. In a separate lesson on early-stage coins, the team asks whether you really want to face losing 10 to 20% of your whole crypto portfolio in days by putting that much into a single early project, in a cycle meant to last years.
How Our Team Takes Profits
In the Academy module on goal setting and profit taking, the team starts with a question: what does success look like for you? Growing wealth, beating inflation and paying off a mortgage each lead to a different sell plan. The module also covers stablecoins, which are tokens designed to track the US dollar, as a way to lock in gains without leaving crypto entirely.
In our live cohort on building a sell plan, one example the team shares is taking a third of a position off each time it doubles. The analyst who used it was clear that it is not a crystal ball and not better or worse than a quarter or a half; it is a personal choice. What matters is that the rule is written down before prices move.
Running a Quarterly Review
The method is not set and forget. In the second video, Ben Simpson walks through the 30-minute review he runs each quarter: check allocation drift, check each position still passes the filter, check custody and update the Profit Ladder. Putting the review in your calendar is the habit that keeps the plan alive.
How Our Team Thinks About Market Cycles
In an October 2026 live cohort session, Ben Simpson described how crypto has more or less followed four-year cycles, with bull markets running around three years and bear markets around one, while stressing that it is not as simple as that. On-chain analyst Checkmate, who writes the on-chain analytics column on our site, puts it this way: he respects the four-year cycle as a framework but does not anchor his view to it.
That is why the SHIFT Method uses a written plan instead of a prediction. The total crypto market fell 48% from its October 2025 peak by June 2026 (The Kobeissi Letter, 5 June 2026). A plan written before a fall like that is the one you are most likely to follow during it.
Security Lessons From Our Live Cohorts
In our week three cohort session on wallet security, the team’s checklist is short. Buy a hardware wallet brand new and direct from the maker’s own store. Treat your recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, as the master key: keep it on paper or another analog format and never type it into a website. Do not act on urgent emails or messages that ask for it.
In October 2026, Director of Research Matt Willemsen wrote up a tampering incident involving hardware wallets sold through an unofficial reseller. His point was that a device bought straight from the maker avoids that risk entirely, and that anyone who bought second hand or from a discount seller should move funds to a new recovery phrase on a device bought direct.
