Wrapped Bitcoin wbtc

WBTC is a token designed to represent bitcoin held in custody, making a representation of BTC usable in applications on supported networks. It is not native BTC in a Bitcoin wallet, and its use adds custody and redemption dependencies. The intended one-for-one backing does not remove market, operational or application risk.

Our wrapped-token guide is the main educational owner for WBTC. It explains minting and redemption, the difference between WBTC and WETH, and the extra questions to ask when a token represents an asset held elsewhere. Keeping that explanation together avoids competing versions of the same beginner guide.

Before using WBTC

Check the exact asset and network supported by your wallet or application, and understand how you would return to native BTC. Buying from an exchange is different from redeeming through an approved merchant. Lending or bridging WBTC can add contract and liquidation risks beyond the wrapper itself, so assess those arrangements separately.
