What Is Bitcoin Dominance and Why Does It Matter?

Key points
- Dominance is Bitcoin market cap divided by total crypto market cap.
- Rising dominance means Bitcoin is outperforming the rest of the market.
- Falling dominance can signal altcoin season, but stablecoins can distort it.
- Comparing each altcoin with Bitcoin is a simple, practical habit.
How is Bitcoin dominance calculated?
Take Bitcoin’s market cap and divide it by the market cap of the whole crypto market, then show it as a percentage. Data sites such as CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap and charting platforms such as TradingView publish it, and each uses a slightly different list of coins, so readings differ a little from site to site.
What rising and falling dominance tell you
| Dominance | Bitcoin price | What it often means |
|---|---|---|
| Rising | Rising | Money is flowing to Bitcoin first |
| Rising | Falling | Altcoins are falling faster than Bitcoin |
| Falling | Rising | Altcoins are outperforming, a classic altcoin season sign |
| Falling | Falling | Money may be moving into stablecoins or out of crypto |
What is altcoin season?
Altcoin season describes a stretch when most large altcoins outperform Bitcoin. Some data sites publish an altcoin season index that measures how many of the top coins beat Bitcoin over a set period. In past cycles these stretches have tended to arrive later in a bull market and to end quickly, which is why a written profit taking plan matters before they start.
Why compare every altcoin with Bitcoin
Ben Simpson’s simplest altcoin check is to chart the coin against Bitcoin over the same period. As he explains in his altcoin research lesson on YouTube, if an altcoin is underperforming Bitcoin, you are taking extra risk without extra reward, and holding Bitcoin alone would have done better. Dominance is that same comparison applied to the whole market.
Our guide to Bitcoin vs altcoins shows how investors decide the split in their own portfolio.
Limits of Bitcoin dominance
- Stablecoins count in the total market cap, so dominance can rise or fall when money moves in or out of stablecoins even if no one buys Bitcoin.
- New tokens with small floats and large FDVs can inflate the total market cap.
- Different data sites include different coins, so compare like with like.
How Collective Shift uses Bitcoin dominance
In the 5-step SHIFT Method, Bitcoin is the core holding and altcoins are a smaller, filtered slice. Dominance and each coin’s chart against Bitcoin are part of the regular review that decides whether an altcoin still earns its place. You can see that review routine in our guide on how to rebalance a crypto portfolio.
Frequently asked questions
What does high Bitcoin dominance mean?
High Bitcoin dominance means Bitcoin makes up a large share of the total crypto market. It usually shows investors are favouring Bitcoin over altcoins.
Does falling Bitcoin dominance mean altcoin season?
Often, but not always. Dominance can also fall when money moves into stablecoins or when new tokens inflate the total market cap. Check whether altcoins are actually beating Bitcoin before drawing a conclusion.
Where can I check Bitcoin dominance?
Data sites such as CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap and charting platforms such as TradingView publish Bitcoin dominance. Each uses a slightly different coin list, so readings can differ a little.
Is Bitcoin dominance a trading signal?
It is more useful as context. Dominance describes where money is flowing across the market, and it is most useful alongside each coin’s chart against Bitcoin and a written plan.
