How Do You Rebalance a Crypto Portfolio?
Two simple ways to bring a crypto portfolio back to the shape you planned, and how to choose between them.
Short answer: To rebalance a crypto portfolio, compare your current holdings with the shape you wrote down, then buy or sell to bring them back in line. Collective Shift, an Australian crypto research and education company, teaches two approaches: time-based reviews on a set schedule, such as each quarter, and threshold rebalancing when a position grows well beyond its planned size.
Key points (TL;DR)
- Rebalancing brings your portfolio back to the shape you planned.
- Time-based: review on a fixed schedule, such as quarterly.
- Threshold: act when a position drifts well beyond its planned size.
- Use the sleep-at-night test as a gut check.
- Consider tax before you sell, and keep records.
What does rebalancing a crypto portfolio mean?
Over time, some holdings grow faster than others and your portfolio drifts away from the shape on your Strategy Sheet. Rebalancing is the process of checking that drift and choosing whether to buy or sell to bring it back.
Watch: Ben Simpson on this topic
Key takeaway: Ben’s quarterly routine: map what you own by sector, check each position’s weighting, run every altcoin through three lenses (fundamentals, technicals and sentiment), review your selling rules, then write any change into your plan.
Key takeaway: A hold or sell framework for reviewing each altcoin you already own, so every position has to keep earning its place.
What is time-based rebalancing?
You pick a review date, for example once a quarter, and check your holdings against your plan each time. If a position has drifted, you adjust it. It is simple, predictable and keeps you from checking prices every day.
What is threshold rebalancing?
You act when a position moves well beyond the size you planned, whenever that happens. Collective Shift analysts note that threshold rebalancing is the more common of the two approaches. For example, if a small altcoin position has a strong run and becomes a much larger share of your portfolio, that is a signal to review it.
A useful gut check is the sleep-at-night test: if a single position has grown so large that it would keep you awake, it is probably time to rebalance.
How does rebalancing fit with taking profits?
Rebalancing looks at the whole portfolio. Taking profits looks at each holding on its own merits. A position that rises sharply may justify selling some, whatever the rest of the portfolio is doing. In the SHIFT Method, step T is Take profits on the way up with a Profit Ladder. Read our crypto exit strategy guide to see how the two work together.
What triggers a rebalance in Ben’s quarterly review?
In his October 2026 quarterly review video, Ben sets a band for each altcoin position based on risk and conviction. When a position moves outside its band, it is time to look. He names three common triggers:
- An altcoin has risen a lot and now outweighs its planned share.
- The original thesis has changed, or it is no longer delivering what you bought it for.
- You need cash to deploy elsewhere.
“The way I rebalance is to build up my Bitcoin stack.”
Ben Simpson, founder of Collective Shift
Ben also starts every review with the original reason he bought each coin, then checks it through three lenses: fundamentals (is it still doing what you bought it for?), technicals (is it keeping pace with Bitcoin?) and sentiment (what is the market saying about it?).
What does rebalancing cost, and how do you keep it simple?
The Collective Shift Academy lesson on building and rebalancing portfolios (September 2026) lists three costs to weigh before you act: your time and energy, tax, and trading costs such as fees and slippage. The team also notes that threshold rebalancing is more common than strict calendar rebalancing.
The lesson’s practical tip is to write your rebalancing rules down and then actually check them, because unchecked rules are easy to abandon when markets get emotional. It also suggests checking whether your holdings are truly diversified or just different coins in the same ecosystem or sector.
Rebalancing is also not the only reason to sell. If one holding rises very quickly, it can justify taking some profit on its own merits, whatever the rest of the portfolio is doing.
What should you check before you rebalance?
- Compare current holdings with your written plan.
- Decide whether new money can fix the drift without selling.
- Consider capital gains tax before you sell. See our guide to crypto tax when taking profits.
- Check liquidity on smaller positions.
- Record what you did and why on your Strategy Sheet.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I rebalance my crypto portfolio?
Many investors review on a set schedule, such as quarterly. Others rebalance only when a position drifts well beyond its planned size. Choose one rule and write it down.
What is threshold rebalancing in crypto?
Threshold rebalancing means acting when a position moves well beyond its planned share of your portfolio, rather than on a fixed date.
What is the sleep-at-night test?
A gut check used at Collective Shift: if a single position has grown so large it would keep you awake, it is likely time to review and rebalance it.
Does rebalancing crypto trigger tax in Australia?
Selling or swapping crypto can be a capital gains tax event in Australia. Check ATO guidance and speak with a registered tax agent.
What are the costs of rebalancing a crypto portfolio?
Time and attention, tax on any disposal, and trading costs such as fees and slippage. Weigh them before you act and keep a record of each change.
Is rebalancing the same as taking profits?
No. Rebalancing looks at the whole portfolio. Taking profits, step T of the SHIFT Method, looks at each holding and its Profit Ladder.
