You Don’t Need to Watch Crypto Charts: Build a Weekly Research Loop

Posted on: October 28, 2026

By Collective Shift, based on Ben Simpson’s live training on 28 October 2026. General information only, not personal financial advice.

Short answer. You do not need to watch crypto charts all day. You need a written plan and a short weekly routine: read the research, write down any change before you make it, act, then review. Ben Simpson calls this the research loop, and it takes minutes a week rather than hours.

As of October 2026.

Most people assume that doing well in crypto means staring at screens. In our live training on 28 October 2026, Ben Simpson put it the other way around: “You don’t need to watch charts, you need a system.” This guide explains that system, the weekly research loop we teach inside every Collective Shift membership, and how you can start running a simple version of it yourself.

Why Do People Think They Need to Watch Charts?

Crypto trades around the clock, and prices move quickly in both directions. That makes it feel as though every move needs a response. In practice, the opposite is usually true. Most costly mistakes come from reacting: buying because a coin is rising fast, or selling in a panic after a sharp drop.

Ben describes the most common strategy he sees as “buy, hold and hope”, with nothing written down. When the market runs, people do not sell because it might go higher. When it drops, they panic. Over a full cycle, that round trip can undo years of gains. His view is simple: “It’s not the person, it’s the process, and the good news is that process can be learned.”

What Is a Weekly Crypto Research Loop?

A research loop is a fixed routine that turns research into written decisions. It has four steps, and you run them once a week.

  1. Research. Read a trusted research update and note anything that affects what you hold or plan to hold.
  2. Decide in writing. If something should change, write the change and the reason before you do anything.
  3. Act. Make only the change you wrote down, nothing more.
  4. Review. Check the result against your plan the following week.

Inside Collective Shift, this loop is how members run the 5-step SHIFT Method each week. Research goes in, written decisions come out.

What Goes on a Strategy Sheet?

The written plan behind the loop is the Strategy Sheet, a one-page document where every decision ends up. It is the S in the 5-step SHIFT Method: Set Your Plan in Writing. A useful Strategy Sheet covers:

  • Your goals. What the money is for and over what timeframe.
  • Your core. In the SHIFT Method, Bitcoin is the core holding, and everything else is built around it.
  • Position sizing and risk limits. How much any single position can be, and how much you are prepared to lose on it.
  • Your filter. The questions every coin must pass before you buy it, such as whether it has real revenue and who uses it.
  • Your exits. A Profit Ladder of planned partial sales, set before the market runs.

When you feel the urge to act because the market is surging or falling, you check the sheet first. That one step takes much of the emotion out of the decision.

Why Does Writing the Reason First Matter?

Ben’s own rule is short: “Nothing in my portfolio changes without a written reason.” Writing the reason first forces you to separate a plan from a reaction. If you cannot explain a change in a sentence or two, that is usually a sign it is a reaction to price rather than a decision.

It also gives you a record. When you review a decision a month later, you can see what you expected and why, which is how a process improves over time.

How Long Does the Loop Take Each Week?

The loop is built for busy people. Most weeks nothing on your Strategy Sheet needs to change, so the routine is a short read and a quick check against your plan. The weeks that take longer are the ones where your own written rules say it is time to act, for example when a price reaches a level on your Profit Ladder.

How Can You Start a Research Loop This Week?

  1. Write one page: your goals, your core holding, your position size limits and your exit rules.
  2. Pick one regular research source you trust, and one fixed time each week to read it.
  3. Keep a simple decision log with three columns: date, change and reason.
  4. Before any trade, check the change is on your sheet and the reason is written down.
  5. Review last week’s decisions before reading this week’s research.
