Collective Shift guide cover: Planning Bitcoin for Retirement

The Short Answer

There is no fixed amount of Bitcoin that guarantees retirement. What you need depends on your yearly spending, your timeline, your other savings and how large a fall you can live through. A Bitcoin retirement plan works backward from the income you want, sizes Bitcoin as one part of a wider portfolio, and sets withdrawal rules in advance so a 70% fall does not force you to sell at the bottom.

As of November 2026. General information only, not personal financial, tax or legal advice. Speak with a licensed US tax professional or financial advisor about your own situation.

Start With Spending, Not the Bitcoin Price

Most “how much Bitcoin do I need” calculations start with a price prediction. That is the weakest input in the whole plan. Start instead with what you control: how much you expect to spend each year in retirement, when you want to stop working and what other income you will have, such as Social Security, a pension or a 401(k).

Retirement researchers often use a withdrawal rate as a reference point. The well-known 4% rule comes from William Bengen’s 1994 research on diversified stock and bond portfolios, not Bitcoin. Applied to a volatile asset, any fixed rate needs a large safety margin.

Watch: Ben Simpson Explains

Ben Simpson works through how Bitcoin fits into a long-term retirement plan and why the timeline matters more than the headline number.

Key points from the video

  • The answer depends on two things: how much Bitcoin grows and how much your lifestyle costs in retirement.
  • Start with your annual funding gap: lifestyle costs minus any income that continues in retirement, adjusted for inflation. The video uses 2.5 percent.
  • The video applies a 3 percent yearly withdrawal rule: divide the funding gap by 3 percent to estimate the portfolio needed.
  • Ben’s scenarios show the Bitcoin needed falling as the time horizon lengthens, because growth compounds. He stresses these are scenarios, not promises.
  • Bitcoin does not produce income, so a written plan for selling is needed to fund retirement spending.

What is a retirement funding gap?

The difference between what your lifestyle costs each year and the income you will still receive, such as dividends or rent. That gap is what your portfolio needs to cover.

Why does a Bitcoin retirement plan need a sell strategy?

Because Bitcoin does not generate cash flow. You fund spending by selling some each year, so the plan needs rules for how much to sell and when.

The Drawdown Test

Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% from a peak several times, including a fall of roughly three quarters between November 2021 and November 2022. Before you plan around Bitcoin, run a simple test: imagine the Bitcoin part of your retirement savings falling 75% in the year you planned to stop work.

QuestionWhy it matters
Could you still cover two to three years of spending from other assets?Lets you wait for a recovery instead of selling at a low
Would you delay retirement if it happened?Shows how much flexibility your plan really has
Would you sell out of fear?If yes, the position is probably too large for your plan

Our portfolio sizing framework walks through the same test for your whole portfolio.

How Much Bitcoin Is Reasonable in a Retirement Portfolio?

There is no single right share. Many people treat Bitcoin as one part of a portfolio that still holds cash, bonds and stocks, so that one asset falling hard does not decide their retirement. The closer you are to needing the money, the more the drawdown test matters.

How Our Analysts Size Positions

The Academy module on portfolio allocation and position sizing describes a portfolio like a house. Core positions are the foundation, and smaller positions are your higher-risk bets on newer coins or themes. Too much in the risky part and the portfolio becomes unstable; too little and you may miss the upside you came for.

In a September 2026 lesson on building and rebalancing portfolios, our team explains why Bitcoin stays the anchor: it is the pillar that has held us in good stead over the years. In a separate lesson on early-stage coins, the team asks whether you really want to face losing 10 to 20% of your whole crypto portfolio in days by putting that much into a single early project, in a cycle meant to last years.

Taxes and Withdrawals in Retirement

Outside retirement accounts, the IRS treats Bitcoin as property, and holdings kept for more than one year generally qualify for long-term capital gains rates. Inside a traditional IRA, withdrawals are generally taxed as income, withdrawals before age 59½ may face an additional 10% tax, and required minimum distributions apply from age 73 for most people. A licensed US tax professional can confirm how this applies to you.

Write Your Withdrawal Rules Now

Decide in advance how you will fund each year of retirement. One common approach keeps one to three years of spending in cash or stablecoins, refills that bucket by selling Bitcoin in strong years, and pauses Bitcoin sales in weak years. Pair it with a Profit Ladder, so you take some gains on the way up before retirement starts. Our crypto exit strategy guide shows how.

How Our Team Takes Profits

In the Academy module on goal setting and profit taking, the team starts with a question: what does success look like for you? Growing wealth, beating inflation and paying off a mortgage each lead to a different sell plan. The module also covers stablecoins, which are tokens designed to track the US dollar, as a way to lock in gains without leaving crypto entirely.

In our live cohort on building a sell plan, one example the team shares is taking a third of a position off each time it doubles. The analyst who used it was clear that it is not a crystal ball and not better or worse than a quarter or a half; it is a personal choice. What matters is that the rule is written down before prices move.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for US readers.

How much Bitcoin do I need to retire?

It depends on your yearly spending, timeline, other income and how large a fall you can live through. Work backward from the income you want and size Bitcoin as one part of a wider portfolio.

Can I retire on Bitcoin alone?

Relying on one volatile asset is a large risk. Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% from a peak several times, so most plans pair it with cash and other investments.

Does the 4% rule work for Bitcoin?

The 4% rule came from research on diversified stock and bond portfolios. Bitcoin is far more volatile, so any fixed withdrawal rate needs a large safety margin.

Can I hold Bitcoin in a retirement account?

Yes, through a spot Bitcoin ETF in an IRA, a self-directed IRA that holds coins, or in some cases a 401(k) brokerage window.

How is Bitcoin taxed in retirement?

In a taxable account, sales can create capital gains. In a traditional IRA, withdrawals are generally taxed as income and required minimum distributions apply from age 73 for most people.
