Crypto Sell Strategy: 5 Tips to Plan Your Exit
How to plan when and how much crypto to sell: the questions to answer first, four common exit approaches, Australian tax basics and how to stick to the plan.
Short answer. A crypto sell strategy is a written plan for when and how much to sell before emotions take over. Set your goal and timeframe, choose price levels or market signals to take profits in stages, plan for Australian capital gains tax, then automate or diarise each step so you follow the plan in a rising market.

Why You Need a Crypto Sell Strategy
Many investors ride a bull market all the way up and all the way back down because they never decided when to sell. A sell strategy, or exit plan, is a set of rules you write down in advance for when and how much you will sell. It helps you take profits or reduce risk on purpose, rather than reacting to headlines, price swings or fear of missing out.
This guide covers general approaches people use. It does not suggest any price targets or how much to sell, because that depends on your goals and circumstances.
Key Takeaways
- Write your exit plan before prices move, when you can think clearly.
- Four common approaches are price levels, set times, gradual selling and profit levels. Many people combine them.
- Answer the planning questions first: why you bought, how long you plan to hold and what you want to keep long term.
- In Australia, selling crypto is usually a CGT event, and holding for at least 12 months may qualify you for the 50% discount.
- Limit orders and calendar reminders help you follow the plan when emotions run high.
Tip 1: Answer the Planning Questions First
Before choosing an approach, write down your answers to these questions:
- Why did you buy each asset, and has that reason changed?
- How long do you plan to hold each one?
- How much do you want to keep for the long term, no matter what?
- What would a life-changing result look like for you, and what would it cost you not to lock some of it in?
- When is your tax due, and how will selling affect your capital gains?
- Do different assets need different plans? Many people treat bitcoin differently from smaller altcoins.
Our guide to creating your personal crypto strategy helps you write these answers into a plan.
Tip 2: Choose an Exit Approach
There is no single right method. These four approaches are common, and many people combine two or more.
| Approach | How it works | Suits people who | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price levels | Sell a set portion each time the price reaches a level you chose in advance | Want clear triggers | Levels set too high may never be reached |
| Set times | Sell at set dates or stages of a market cycle, regardless of price | Think in market cycles | Cycles do not repeat exactly |
| Dollar cost averaging out | Sell a fixed amount at regular intervals once you start | Do not want to pick a top | Can sell early in a strong market |
| Profit levels | Sell a portion when your unrealised gain reaches set levels | Want to recover their original investment first | Needs accurate cost records |
Selling at price levels
You choose the price levels in advance and decide what portion to sell at each one. Some people use the first sale to recover what they originally invested, so the rest of the position is profit. Our Profit Ladder guide shows how to lay this out step by step.
Selling at set times
Some investors plan around bitcoin’s roughly four-year cycle, which has historically followed each halving. They plan sales for set stages of the cycle rather than set prices. The risk is that cycles change, so many combine time with price.
Dollar cost averaging out
Picking the top is extremely difficult. Dollar cost averaging out means selling a fixed amount at regular intervals once a trigger is reached, which averages your exit price across many sales.
Selling at profit levels
A variation on price levels: you sell a portion when your unrealised profit reaches levels you set in advance. It needs accurate records of what you paid, which crypto tax software can help with.
Tip 3: Plan for Tax Before You Sell
The ATO treats each sale or swap of crypto as a capital gains tax (CGT) event (ATO). Individuals who held an asset for at least 12 months before selling may be eligible for the 50% CGT discount (ATO). Moving crypto between your own wallets is not a disposal, but keep records.
- Keep a record of every purchase, transfer and sale.
- Set aside money for the tax on your gains.
- Think about timing: the 12 month rule and the financial year can change how much tax you pay.
- Speak with a registered tax agent who understands crypto.

Tip 4: Learn From a Real Process
As one example, Collective Shift founder Ben Simpson has shared the five steps he uses when it is time to sell. This is his personal process, not a recommendation:
- Plan. Decide in advance which levels or conditions will trigger a sale and what portion to sell at each.
- Choose the exchange. Pick a reputable exchange based on security, ease of use and fees.
- Move from cold storage. Transfer the portion to be sold from a hardware wallet to the exchange, checking the address on the device.
- Set aside tax. Work out the likely tax and set that money aside, with advice from a crypto tax specialist.
- Execute and review. Follow the plan, then review it as markets and goals change.

Tip 5: Automate So You Stick to the Plan
Writing a plan is one thing. Following it when prices are moving fast is harder. Two simple tools help:
- Limit orders. Many exchanges let you set an order to sell at a chosen price in advance.
- Calendar reminders. For time-based plans, a calendar reminder makes sure each date is not missed.
Review the plan at set times, such as each quarter, rather than when the market is at an extreme.

How Collective Shift teaches the trim ladder
In the Week 4 live cohort session "Build Your Sell Plan, Mindset and Your Next 90 Days" (September 2026), the team explained the trim ladder: you take chips off the table in stages while keeping some exposure in case the market keeps rising.
In the October 2026 cohort's Week 4 session, the team added that laddering out in steps means that if the market goes on to run further, you are unlikely to feel frustrated, because you have already taken meaningful profits along the way.
- Write the goal first: lifestyle, debt, or building your Bitcoin stack.
- Set staged price levels or signals for each holding.
- Estimate the tax on each step before you sell.
- Review the ladder each quarter.
“And after seeing so many people that I've worked with over the past six years, the number one problem everyone has is taking profits.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a crypto sell strategy?
A sell strategy, or exit plan, is a set of rules you write down in advance for when and how much crypto you will sell. It helps you take profits or reduce risk on purpose, rather than reacting to headlines or price swings.
What are the most common ways to plan a crypto exit?
Four common approaches are selling at price levels you set in advance, selling at set times, selling gradually in regular amounts (dollar cost averaging out), and selling when your unrealised profit reaches set levels. Many people combine them.
Do I pay tax when I sell crypto in Australia?
Usually, yes. The ATO treats selling or swapping crypto as a capital gains tax event. If you held the asset for at least 12 months before selling, you may be eligible for the 50% CGT discount as an individual. Speak with a registered tax agent about your situation.
Is moving crypto to an exchange a taxable event?
No. Moving crypto between wallets or accounts you own is not a disposal for tax. The sale on the exchange is. Keep records of every transfer and sale.
How do I stick to my sell plan?
Write the plan down before prices move, set limit orders or calendar reminders for each step, and review the plan at set times rather than when the market is moving fast.
Should I sell everything at once?
That depends on your goals, tax position and circumstances. Many people find that selling in stages reduces the pressure to pick a perfect top. This is general information, so consider speaking with a licensed adviser.
What is a trim ladder?
A trim ladder is Collective Shift’s name for selling in planned stages. You take some profit at each step while keeping exposure in case the market keeps rising. It is taught in Week 4 of Collective Shift’s live cohort sessions.
Why does Ben Simpson take profits in stages?
In his October 2026 profit-taking video, Ben says the most common problem he sees is not taking profits, and that a staged profit ladder avoids trying to sell at the exact top.
